Choosing an HVAC Contractor

Choose an HVAC Contractor Picture

This time of year is a busy one for most air conditioning contractors. In fact, here in Knoxville, TN, soaring 90-degree temperatures have already given most of our air conditioners a run for their money and summer has just begun!

With that said, you or someone you know may need to call on an A/C repair company for help during the heat wave. Choosing the right heating and air contractor for your air conditioning repair can seem like a daunting task. As you begin your search, the qualities below are a good place to start in deciding who to call when you need A/C service fast!

1) Licensing, Insurance & Bonding
One way to spot a professional HVAC contractor is to look for one that is appropriately licensed, insured and bonded. These measures are layers of protection for you as a consumer. Possessing the correct licensing means they have satisfied the requirements of their state or local area to practice their trade. Being properly insured can provide protection against any unforeseen damage to your property or to cover any incidents related to employee injury. Additionally, if they are bonded, the bond acts as another layer of security. The contractor pays money to a surety company for a bond that can cover circumstances that typical insurance may not cover, such as failure to complete a job, not performing work that was promised or financial discrepancies that may arise.

2) Established Company
This is a given. If you need air conditioning service, find out how long the company has been in business. Of course, the longer they have been established, the more likely they are to be equipped with the knowledge and experience get the job done successfully and professionally. Time allows for a reputation to be built and established, not just in the air conditioning industry, but with any business. This brings us to the next point.

3) Verified Reviews
These days, consumers have a plethora of information at their fingertips. Remember that reputation we mentioned before? If a company has been in business for a good length of time, there are most likely consumer reviews on multiple websites bearing their service record. You can often get a feel for the honesty, integrity, skill level and overall culture of a company from reading what customers have to say. The important thing to remember when reading reviews, however, is that some sources are more reliable than others. Your best bet is to look for verified sources, like the Better Business Bureau and Angie's List, where you can find honest, trusted reviews and ratings from actual customers.

4) Responsiveness
So you've done a bit of research and narrowed it down to two or three companies. Eenie, meenie, miney, mo and you pick one to call first. Does someone answer promptly when you call? Or does the phone just ring and ring with no answer? If they do pick up, is someone there to speak to you about your problem right away? Or if not, does someone who can help call you back quickly? Responsiveness is crucial in a time of need. If you don't get a response in a reasonable amount of time, consider moving on down the list.
